Melasma is a psychologically stressful skin disorder also known as "chloasma" or "mask of pregnancy." Dark spots on the skin gradually appear on the cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip. This condition is more common in women and is associated with pregnancy and medications that contain hormones.

Melasma is divided into three types: • Epidermal: Epidermal melasma is the most superficial and is characterized by an increase in skin pigmentation (melanin) in the upper layer of the skin (epidermis). • Dermal: Dermal melasma is characterized by increased skin pigmentation at the level of the second layer of the skin (the dermis). • Mixed: Mixed melasma is an association of epidermal and dermal melasma.
